How many times has a reader seen a film or read a book where some revered religious icon was used as a supposed weapon against the forces of evil?

In western society, most have been brought up with the belief that such icons as the cross have such powerful spiritual currency that it has the power to ward off evil. We have Pope Vigilius a crafty Catholic Pope who around 550 CE when millions were dropping like flies from the onset of the greatest plague in human history came up with a brilliant marketing strategy. He came up with the idea of selling wooden crosses, miniature crosses of wood which willing purchasers would put around their necks as talisman to ward off evil.

Of course, movies that promote the same values of special powers also help, especially when the evil force has fangs and wings, or some other horrendous characteristics.

Religious icons and symbols have no power unless they are believed at the time to hold power

The truth is that religious icons only have power to those that believe they have power. They certainly have no power over genuinely evil spirits. Over human spirits pretending to be demons, there is some evidence their preconditioning affects them to some extent in believing some icons and rituals to have power.

In spite of this, come disaster, people as they have always done will rush to clasp something that gives them comfort. The belief in the cross having supernatural powers will not dissipate any time soon.
