A key apsect of traditions of western magic texts used today is the heavy emphasis on particular ritual- the use of certain types of circles, the use of symbols and signs, the use of certain objects and incantations and emphasis on modes of dress and movement.

To those who attend such ceremonies and participate, the emphasis on ritual and detail can enhance the overall experience and legitimize the whole process as being somthing of great power and antiquity. However, the truth of ritual versus the "smoke and mirrors" is:

Ritual is an important aid to strengthening belief but never greater than belief itself

Ritual can help stimulate the experience of divine revelation
There is no question that the importance of ritual and consistency of process can enhance the human experience of divine revelation.
Human beings are most comfortable in allowing their minds to enter a different state when they can enter a familiar and repetitive environment that also remains stimulating. Given many religious rituals are designed less from the point of view of stimulating followers and more from orthodoxy and compromise, magic offers many a freedom and excitement not found in traditional religious experience.
Over emphasis on technicality of ritual is a farce
However, like all ritual magic itself suffers from the curse of those who have wholly become intoxicated in the technical nature of ritual and less in the intent and belief underpinning certain rituals.
So what you see in many levels of magic, from wicca, to druidism, to white magic to black occult magic are those who proclaim strict "doctrines" and "orthodoxy" in terms of dress, incantations, and ritual.
It is one thing to try and maintain consistent rituals. It is another thing entirely to complete lose perspective of what is most important in all magic process. Belief drives magic. Collective belief is the force that makes magic happen. Pure ritual without understanding is merely a show- devoid of any real substance.
